The COMS Soft Launch marked the official introduction of Colour of My Skin (COMS), setting out the vision, values, and purpose behind the initiative. The event explored the origins of COMS, the issues it seeks to address, and why tackling racism and skin colour based inequality remains vital in modern British society.
The launch brought together influential voices from sport, media, and public service, each sharing powerful insights and personal experiences related to racism and social justice.
Speakers included Ged Grebby, Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card, the UK’s leading anti-racism charity, who spoke about the importance of education and long term cultural change. Howard Gayle, the first Black professional footballer to play for Liverpool FC, reflected on his experiences and the role of sport in challenging discrimination. Frank Sinclair, former Chelsea FC player, paid tribute to COMS’ first ambassador, Kevin Campbell, the former Arsenal striker who sadly passed away before the event.
The programme also featured Fred Whitfield, a former police inspector, who shared his experiences of witnessing racism within society, and Jaz Singh, BBC radio presenter, who guided discussions and highlighted the role of media in shaping public understanding.
The soft launch set a strong foundation for COMS’ ongoing work to promote equality, understanding, and inclusion across communities.
The Kevin Campbell Tribute Event was held to honour Kevin Campbell as the first ambassador of Colour of My Skin (COMS) and to celebrate his legacy, values, and commitment to equality. The event also aimed to raise awareness of the COMS movement and its mission to challenge racism and skin colour based discrimination.
Hosted as a formal black tie gala, the evening brought together figures from across sport, culture, and community leadership. The programme included an introduction to COMS and highlighted the important role Kevin played in shaping the vision and direction of the initiative from its earliest stages.
Guests were entertained by live music from Steve Charles, creating a reflective and celebratory atmosphere. A series of guest speakers paid tribute to Kevin and spoke about his impact both on and off the pitch. These included Frank Sinclair, former Chelsea FC player, and Lee Carsley, who was Interim Manager of the England men’s national team at the time. The evening also featured a special video message from Dave Bassett, former football manager.
Further tributes were delivered by Bobbie Goulding, former rugby league international, Joe Egan, former professional boxer, and Bruce Grobbelaar, former professional footballer, each sharing personal reflections on Kevin’s influence and character.
All funds raised during the event were donated to and formally presented to the Kevin Campbell Foundation, ensuring his legacy continues to support positive change within communities.
